About

Nanjizal, also known locally as Mill Bay, is one of Cornwall's best-kept secrets—a stunning, secluded beach tucked away on the southwestern tip of England near Land's End. This remote cove remains largely undiscovered by mass tourism, offering visitors a tranquil escape from the more crowded Cornish beaches.

Natural Beauty

What makes Nanjizal truly special is its remarkable natural features. The beach is renowned for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and fine golden sand that appears at low tide. The star attraction is undoubtedly the "Song of the Sea"—a spectacular natural rock arch with a narrow channel that glows with an ethereal emerald light when sunlight filters through the water.

The surrounding landscape features dramatic granite cliffs sculpted by the Atlantic into fascinating formations, with numerous caves and rock pools to explore. The beach is framed by rugged headlands that provide shelter and create a sense of intimate seclusion.

Wildlife and Natural Environment

Nanjizal sits within an area of outstanding natural beauty and ecological significance. The waters offshore are frequently visited by seals, while the cliffs provide nesting sites for various seabirds. During spring and summer, the surrounding coastal path explodes with colorful wildflowers, including sea thrift, campion, and gorse.

The pristine water quality makes it ideal for snorkeling when conditions are calm, offering glimpses of the diverse marine life that inhabits the Cornish coast.

Access Information

Part of Nanjizal's charm is its relative inaccessibility. There is no direct road access or nearby parking, which helps preserve its unspoiled character. Visitors must walk approximately one mile from the nearest parking areas:

  • From the north: Park at Porthgwarra and follow the South West Coast Path south
  • From the south: Park at Porthcurno and follow the coastal path north
  • From inland: Limited parking is available near Trevescan, with a footpath leading to the beach

The descent to the beach involves a somewhat steep path that can be slippery when wet, so appropriate footwear is recommended.

Practical Considerations

  • There are no facilities on the beach—no toilets, shops, or cafes
  • The beach largely disappears at high tide, so checking tide times is essential
  • Swimming should be approached with caution as there are no lifeguards and strong currents can occur
  • The remote location means mobile phone reception is limited

Nanjizal's remote nature and lack of amenities means it's best suited for adventurous visitors who appreciate natural beauty in its most untouched form.
